CDJ Player Guide
Pioneer CDJ-2000NXS2: File Format & Compatibility Guide
The CDJ-2000NXS2 is Pioneer DJ's flagship player released in 2017 and remains the global club standard. It added full FLAC, Apple Lossless (ALAC), and high-resolution WAV/AIFF support (88.2 and 96 kHz) over its predecessor the CDJ-2000NXS. Understanding these specifications is critical when preparing USB sticks or SD cards for clubs that may still have a mix of CDJ-2000NXS and CDJ-2000NXS2 units installed.

Some files may not play even if the format is listed as supported. The most common cause is encoding that technically matches the format but violates the exact spec — see compatibility issues below.

Common Compatibility Issues
WAV/AIFF/FLAC/ALAC: Not playable from disc (CD/DVD)
WAV at 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz, AIFF at 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz, FLAC, and Apple Lossless files recorded on physical discs (CD-R, DVD-R etc.) cannot be played. These formats are only supported from USB devices and SD cards. This is an important distinction — a USB that works fine will not guarantee a burned disc works.
Use USB or SD card for FLAC, ALAC, and hi-res WAV/AIFF. Discs are limited to MP3, AAC, standard-res WAV, AIFF, and audio CD (CD-DA).
WAV: 32-bit float files do not play
The CDJ-2000NXS2 only supports 16-bit and 24-bit PCM WAV. Tracks exported from DAWs like Ableton Live or Logic Pro default to 32-bit float WAV, which the player rejects — the track appears in the library but fails to load.
Full fix guide: CDJ E-8304/E-8305: 32-bit Float WAV Fix — Pioneer CDJWAV: Non-standard header format (WAV EXTENSIBLE)
Some recording and mastering software writes WAV files using the EXTENSIBLE header format rather than standard PCM. The CDJ-2000NXS2 cannot parse this header variant and will refuse to play the file even if the underlying audio data is otherwise compatible.
Full fix guide: CDJ E-8305: WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE WAV Fix (Bandcamp)AIFF: Compressed AIFF-C files not supported
Only uncompressed PCM AIFF files are supported. AIFF-C (compressed) files will not play. This is uncommon but can occur with exports from older Pro Tools versions or certain mastering tools.
Full fix guide: CDJ E-8305: Compressed AIFF-C File Fix (ALAW, ADPCM)AAC: DRM-protected files cannot be played
AAC files purchased from the iTunes Store before 2009 contain FairPlay DRM. The CDJ-2000NXS2 cannot decrypt them — the .m4a format is supported, but DRM-locked files are not. There is no technical fix; a DRM-free source is required.
Full fix guide: CDJ E-8305: DRM-Protected AAC (iTunes Store) Cannot PlayUSB: NTFS filesystem not recognized
USB devices formatted as NTFS will not appear in the source list. Windows defaults to NTFS for larger drives — reformat as FAT32 or HFS+ before use.
Reformat your USB device as FAT32 or HFS+. On Windows: right-click the drive → Format → FAT32. On Mac: Disk Utility → Erase → MS-DOS (FAT) or Mac OS Extended. Note: FAT32 has a 4 GB per-file limit; use HFS+ for files larger than 4 GB.
USB: Hubs and optical drives not supported
USB hubs cannot be used — only direct connection to the player's USB port is supported. External DVD/CD drives and other optical disc-type USB devices are also not supported.
Connect USB flash drives or hard disks directly to the CDJ-2000NXS2's USB port without a hub.
SD card: CPRM-protected cards not supported
SD memory cards with CPRM copy protection are not supported. Standard SD and SDHC cards formatted as FAT12/FAT16 (SD) or FAT32 (SDHC) work correctly.
Use a standard non-CPRM SD or SDHC card, formatted appropriately.
PRO DJ LINK: File path too long
Tracks load fine from USB directly but fail via PRO DJ LINK. The full file path must be under 256 characters. Deep folder structures with long names frequently exceed this limit.
Flatten your folder structure or shorten folder and file names before exporting to USB.
Check your library
Scan for compatibility issues before your gig
Manually checking files works for single tracks. For a full library of hundreds or thousands of files, Boothready scans everything in one pass — WAV encoding, sample rates, FLAC compatibility on older models, and path lengths — and auto-fixes what it can before you export to USB.

Frequently asked questions
Does the CDJ-2000NXS2 support FLAC?
Yes. The CDJ-2000NXS2 supports FLAC (.flac, .fla) at 16-bit and 24-bit, at 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, and 96 kHz — from USB and SD card only. FLAC files on physical discs (CD-R/DVD-R) cannot be played.
Can the CDJ-2000NXS2 play 96 kHz WAV or AIFF files?
Yes. The CDJ-2000NXS2 supports WAV and AIFF at 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, and 96 kHz, at 16-bit and 24-bit. However, 88.2 kHz and 96 kHz files on discs cannot be played — only from USB or SD card.
What file system does a CDJ-2000NXS2 USB need?
Your USB device must be formatted as FAT16, FAT32, or HFS+. NTFS is not supported. Windows defaults to NTFS for larger drives, so always check before your gig. Note that FAT32 has a 4 GB per-file size limit; use HFS+ if you have files larger than 4 GB.
What SD cards work with the CDJ-2000NXS2?
SD cards from 8 MB to 2 GB formatted as FAT12 or FAT16, and SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB formatted as FAT32 are supported. CPRM-protected cards are not supported. Mini-SD and micro-SD cards in standard SD adapters also work.
Why does my WAV file not play on the CDJ-2000NXS2?
The most common causes are: 32-bit float WAV (only 16-bit and 24-bit PCM is supported), a non-standard WAV EXTENSIBLE header, or a USB device formatted as NTFS. Hi-res files (88.2/96 kHz) will only play from USB or SD — not from disc.
What is the difference between CDJ-2000NXS and CDJ-2000NXS2?
The CDJ-2000NXS2 added FLAC, Apple Lossless (ALAC), and high-resolution WAV/AIFF support (88.2 kHz and 96 kHz) — none of which are available on the CDJ-2000NXS. It also introduced a full-color touchscreen display and upgraded PRO DJ LINK with Wi-Fi support. The core format support for MP3, AAC, WAV, and AIFF at standard sample rates (44.1 and 48 kHz) is identical between the two models.
