Some files may not play even if the format is listed as supported. The most common cause is encoding that technically matches the format but violates the exact spec — see compatibility issues below.

Common Compatibility Issues

WAV: 32-bit float files do not play

The CDJ-3000X only supports 16-bit and 24-bit PCM WAV. Tracks exported from DAWs like Ableton Live or Logic Pro default to 32-bit float WAV, which the player rejects silently — the track appears in the library but fails to load.

WAV: Sample rate above 96 kHz not supported

WAV and AIFF files at 176.4 kHz or 192 kHz exceed the CDJ-3000X's maximum supported sample rate of 96 kHz. The player will skip the track without displaying a clear error.

WAV: Non-standard header format (WAV EXTENSIBLE)

Some recording software writes WAV files using the EXTENSIBLE header format instead of standard PCM. The CDJ-3000X cannot parse this variant and will refuse to play the file even if the audio data itself is compatible.

Full fix guide: CDJ E-8305: WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE WAV Fix (Bandcamp)

AIFF: Compressed AIFF-C files not supported

Only uncompressed PCM AIFF is supported. AIFF-C (compressed) files will not play. This is rare but can occur with exports from certain older Pro Tools versions.

AAC: DRM-protected files cannot be played

AAC files purchased from the iTunes Store before 2009 contain FairPlay DRM. The CDJ-3000X cannot decrypt them — the .m4a format is supported, but DRM-locked files are not. There is no technical fix; a DRM-free source is required.

USB: NTFS filesystem not recognized

USB devices formatted as NTFS will not appear in the source list at all. Windows 10/11 defaults to NTFS when formatting large USB drives. The CDJ-3000X supports FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and HFS+ — but not NTFS.

Reformat your USB device as exFAT (recommended for large drives and large files), FAT32, or HFS+. On Windows: right-click the drive → Format → exFAT. On Mac: Disk Utility → Erase → ExFAT or Mac OS Extended.

PRO DJ LINK: File path too long

Tracks load fine directly from USB but fail via PRO DJ LINK. The full file path — including all folder names and the filename — must be under 256 characters. Deep folder structures with long artist, label, or title names frequently exceed this limit.

Flatten your folder structure or shorten folder and file names before exporting to USB.

No SD card slot — USB only

Unlike the CDJ-2000NXS and CDJ-2000NXS2, the CDJ-3000X has no SD card slot. USB is the only media source. If your workflow involves SD cards, you will need an SD-to-USB adapter.

Use a USB drive. For large file collections, exFAT is recommended as it removes the FAT32 4 GB per-file limit.

Check your library

Scan for compatibility issues before your gig

Manually checking files works for single tracks. For a full library of hundreds or thousands of files, Boothready scans everything in one pass — WAV encoding, sample rates, FLAC compatibility on older models, and path lengths — and auto-fixes what it can before you export to USB.

About the CDJ-3000X

The CDJ-3000X is AlphaTheta's successor to the CDJ-3000, released in 2024. It shares the same audio format support as the CDJ-3000 — WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, MP3, and AAC up to 96 kHz — but adds exFAT filesystem support, removing the FAT32 4 GB per-file limit. It has no SD card slot; USB is the only media source.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CDJ-3000X support FLAC?

Yes. The CDJ-3000X supports FLAC (.flac, .fla) at 16-bit and 24-bit, with sample rates of 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96 kHz.

Does the CDJ-3000X support exFAT?

Yes — this is one of the key improvements over the CDJ-3000. The CDJ-3000X supports FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and HFS+. exFAT removes the FAT32 4 GB per-file size limit, which is relevant for very long uncompressed WAV files.

What is the difference between CDJ-3000 and CDJ-3000X?

The CDJ-3000X adds exFAT filesystem support and removes the SD card slot that was present on the CDJ-3000. The audio format support is identical between both models: WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, MP3, and AAC, with WAV/AIFF/FLAC/ALAC up to 96 kHz.

Does the CDJ-3000X have an SD card slot?

No. Unlike the CDJ-3000, the CDJ-3000X does not have an SD card slot. USB is the only media source. This is a notable change for DJs who previously used SD cards.

Why does my WAV file not play on the CDJ-3000X?

The most common causes are: 32-bit float WAV (only 16 and 24-bit PCM is supported), sample rate above 96 kHz (e.g. 192 kHz), a non-standard WAV EXTENSIBLE header, or a USB device formatted as NTFS. The CDJ-3000X supports exFAT, FAT32, FAT16, and HFS+ — but not NTFS.
